In 2023, I created a comprehensive accessibility checklist to be used as part of every design-to-development handoff at Compiler. The goal of the checklist was to shift the burden of accessibility upstream into the design process and empower design to make inclusive choices earlier and more consistently.

Rather than rehash WCAG guidelines, I focused on actionable heuristics; the checklist was tailored to Compiler’s design approach, dev environment, and user base, including older adults, users with cognitive differences, and screenreader users.

Strategically, the checklist is a simple artifact–the designer makes a copy, goes through it in regards to a new feature release and uses the checklist during the dev handoff as a means of setting the agenda and reviewing the design.
